Hi! You’re looking at a SUPERB condition book which is VERY RARE, hard to find and OUT OF PRINT and a beautiful collection of thirteen number systems from around the world written and illustrated by LEONARD EVERETT FISHER–the book is an OVERSIZED volume and a HARDCOVER with the ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET and is NOT a remainder copy.  This book is in SUPERB condition and the book itself has a small owner’s last name on the upper right edge of the blank first page and a light ding on the bottom spine tip but NO other significant imperfections; the dustjacket has a light ding on the bottom spine tip and just very light shelfwear but no other significant flaws.  The book is titled Number Art: Thirteen 1 2 3s from Around the World and it was written and illustrated by LEONARD EVERETT FISHER; it was published by Four Winds Press in 1982 and is a 2nd Printing with a publication line reading 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2.

For tens of thousands of years, people have kept numerical records. Prehistoric people noted home many woolly mammoths they killed by scratching or painting cave walls. If a man killed four beasts, he might carve four lives in the rock.  As people continued to progress, their lives became more complex.  They developed numerical notation systems to record their increased activities.

In this volume, Leonard Everett Fisher traces the history and design of numerals. Thirteen exquisite notation systems are reproduced, including the familiar Arabic and Roman notation systems, as well as the Armenian, Brahmi, Chinese, Egyptian, Gothic, Greek, Mayan, Runes, Sanskrit, Thai, and Tibetan systems.  The illustrations for each show a variety of graceful forms–from the bold simplicity of the Brahmi, to the delicate complexity of the Chinese.

Each notation is complemented by a concise history of the individual and / or the culture that created it.  Algorismus, Bishop Ulfilas, the Egyptian priests and hieroglyphics, Pythagoras, Mayan astronomy, pagan rituals, and Indian missionaries are only some of the fasciating discussions accompanying each notation system.

The thoughtful text and graceful illustrations provide an interesting, informative, visually beautiful reading experieence.

A fantastic find, and a beautiful copy of this book!
