Very versatile, high quality lens
I've had this lens for more than a year now and taken a few thousand pictures with it. It blows my old Tamron zoom completely away. 24-85mm is a huge range. It's just so darn convenient to zoom instead of changing lenses. The color is excellent with only a little aberration noticeable with extreme contrasts. It's certainly bigger and heavier than a point-and-shoot camera, but it delivers the same kind of instant flexibility. The "macro" switch is a little cumbersome and mine broke off after a while. I have other lenses for macros so I put a piece of tape over it and haven't missed it. It takes sharp photos, but certainly not as sharp as my Nikkor 60mm f2.8D macro.
My biggest gripe with this lens is the barrel distortion at the wider-angle settings. I can never seem to fully correct the distortion in Photoshop and on architecture shots I could spend forever trying.
I hardly ever use the 85mm end of this lens and over half the pictures I take (on my D50) are at 24mm. I've never tried the Nikon 17-55mm, but it is highly rated and I sometimes think of trading this in for one. But that lens is much more expensive.
Heck, if money was no object, I'd hire a porter to carry around a bag of prime lenses and clean each one every time I switched. But in the real world, this is a great all-purpose lens in its price range. Not to mention that leaving a lens on the camera eliminates the chance of a piece of dust landing on the sensor.Read full review...
wonderful light weight lens
I bought this lens as used excellent condition for good price for my full frame Nikon D610 camera .
I think it is great lens for daily photography of portrait street landscape and cityscape as it could be considered as all in one lens for travel photography duo to its lightweight and good built .
This lens is fast , sharp and accurate in focusing with a privilege of VR .
The main drawbacks for me were related to distortions at the both ends 24mm and 85mm
I think this lens is must for any enthusiastic photographer and I highly recommend having it among other specialized expensive lensesRead full review...

I love this lens. As crazy as it sounds I didn't think a 20 year old lens would give me such fantastic shots. I picked this up on ebay for under $80.00 and it was worth it. I use it as my everyday lens. It is a lens that I didn't spend a grand on so I allow my kids to use it when they want to photograph things too.
There are some cons but every lens has a con right?
Now it could be the age of the lens, maybe even that who know how many people have previously owned this lens so who knows the history...
But it is very touchy on focusing. I have had to get to know my lenses sweet spot. Sometimes I have to remove the lens and put back on the camera in order for it to focus. It rarely happens but wouldn't trust this lens at any important photo session where it could happen. But I guess since this lens was purchased for a lightweight every day use lens it wouldn't apply anyways. The images are sharp and only have to start doing noise reduction at around 600 ISO. Which is a pain but I am usually outside so photograph at 200-400 ISO. THis is a great lens all in all and I am so glad I picked this up to add to my lens collection! :DRead full review...
A great walk-around lens
I bought this lens to cover the general walk-around photographing - so it is
on my camera all the time. The lens is
1. Sharp through out the zoom range
2. A great day-light lens with better than average speed
3. To obtain a natural feeling of the photos, I also put a Nikon NC filter
and it turns out great results.
4. In motion and low-light situations, I feel that the lens is still not fast
enough (compared with my other lenses --- 20 mm f2.8, 24 mm f2.8, 50 mm
f1.8, 60 mm f2.8 and 85 mm f2.8 within this lens' zoom range)
5. Over all, this lens slightly better than my Sigma lens in similar zoom
range (Sigma 19-70 mm). It is a great general lens, but a $900 new amateur
lens is considering high cost. It is even better if you can get the f2.8
lens in the similar range.
I like this lens, and I hope you enjoy it as well.Read full review...
Bang for the buck incarnate!
VERY nice lens. Especially for the price. I bought it for my wife's crop sensor Nikon D5300. A very picky 24MP camera that sees the flaws in many lower price zooms. This lens not only performs great on it but also my VERY picky Nikon D800. I'd been looking at the the very expensive Nikkor 24-70 F/2.8 to fill the gap between my 16-35mm F/4 Nikkor and my 70-200 F/4 Nikkor on my D800. I tested this on it and now I'm thinking about buying another for me instead since it wouldn't be getting a ton of use and this lens is only a bit weak at the 85mm end where I'm already covered by my 70-200. SUPER sharp in the 24-50mm range. Excellent value1Read full review...
This ain't a scalpel... this is a Swiss Army knife.
I bought this lens as a replacement for my 24-70. At first I was skeptical about it, especially since there are so many people that say this "isn't sharp". To my surprise this lens is very sharp! Yes it is a bit soft in the corners but nothing that you should be concerned about. If you are willing to pay 2x more go for the 24-70, but you honestly won't be getting much more... Trust me I owned it.
The best photographers in the world don't care about absolute sharpness, and you should be using primers and not zooms if you do photography professionally. This lens is amazing in its own spectrum. Personally I find the extra 15mm much handier for walking around, and the macro feature is an incredible tool to have available. If you want better results for macro or 1:1 reproduction then you should get a macro lens.
I only gave it 4 stars because my complaint is that the zoom ring sticks... Construction overall is not like other D series lenses with metal and very precise controls. This is mostly plastic and the zoom feel is not there because it isn't smooth.
This is my walk around/travel lens. It doesn't disappoint me. I'll carry this and a prime telephoto like my 135 DC or 180mm 2.8. If I travel I take this and a 50 1.8 for low light and a 105 ai-s for reach. Buy it!Read full review...

Excellent Lens to Use
This is one of my favorite focal lengths for just "walking around" shooting. It can produce images that show a definite wide-angle effect or totally normal appearing ones, depending on how the photographer aims it! e.g., It is wide enough to begin to bring out the sweep of clouds in the sky in landscape photos, or hold it level and vertical lines look normal. I also like that this more affordable lens is less prone to distortion than some zooms that would include this focal length. The f2.8 maximum aperture is bright enough for normal use as well. I have used an older version of it for many years and wanted one more appropriate and better coated for both my film cameras and digital SLR. So far it is working out just fine.Read full review...
Nikon Nikkor AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4.0D IF Lens
I decided to purchase this lens after reading many reviews online. I wanted to replace a Sigma 28-105 lens after I noticed a lack of sharpness when moving it from my N80 to my D80. I wanted something that would maintain that 'walk around' zoom range and be inter-changeable with FX and DX. This lens is sharp, focuses quickly and has great contrast and color. It really becomes apparent when I use it on my Fuji S-3 Pro, due to the improved dynamic range available with that camera. It's a keeper, as I also use a standard 3.5 version, the 18-55 VR lens, 50mm 1.8, the 70-210 F4 and the Tokina 16-50 F2.8. The new G lenses are okay, but I have sold mine and gone back to the early models for flexibility and variety on all three cameras. I am currently looking for the Fuji S-5 to round out my fleet. If you find a good deal on one of these, grab it. I got mine from a great ebayer who got it to me very promptly, and it looks like new!Read full review...
Ideal compact prime lens to leave on a Nikon DX
Modern DSLRs with zoom lenses are way too large to carry around easily and I wanted a small prime lens for my Nikon D90 to make it as compact as possible for use as a carry-around camera. I have a 35mm lens but that focal length is too long for scenery. The Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 Lens is perfect for a DX camera; it is exceptionally sharp edge to edge, and doesn't seem to be affected by flare. It also has the advantage of being usable on a full frame Nikon, should I decide to move up to FX.
There are only 2 minor disadvantages: at f2.8 it's a little slow; and it's not an 'S' lens, so has no focusing motor (cannot be used on a D40).
I love this lens!Read full review...
Size and weight matters.
This may not be the sharpest of my lenses, but I love its small size and weight. Starting at 24mm is important for some true wide-angle work and so with 85mm at the long end we have a very usable range in a single lens. There are times when carrying more lenses or lens changes is just too much to deal with. This lens being small and light while offering a great range of focal lengths, while giving respectable image quality, make it a nice one.Read full review...
