Item Description

To fulfill the needs of digital photographers owning Nikon cameras with DX-sized sensors, Nikon produces the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S DX Lens.

This lens produces an angle of view similar to what a 50mm lens
would produce on a full-frame/FX camera and thusly functions as a
“normal” lens. Prior to the digital explosion, most shooters would begin
their exploration into the world of photography with a “normal” lens
with a large maximum aperture.

A lens of this type is the
traditional standby for low-light shooting, careful composition, and
street shooting. This 35mm f/1.8 Nikkor lens recreates that experience
for DX format shooters who have been seeking a comparable “normal” lens.

Fast “Normal” Lens

The 35mm focal length closely matches a 50mm lens in the FX
format. This is perceived to be a natural lens as it provides an
undistorted angle of view that is similar to what the unaided human eye

A desirable lens for low-light, travel, environmental portraiture and overall general photography.

Contains an Aspherical Lens Element

The incorporation of an aspherical element minimizes coma and
other lens aberrations, further improving image integrity.

Super Integrated Coating (SIC)

This lens coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency with reduced flare.

Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)

The motor embedded in the body of the lens enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocusing.

7-blade Diaphragm

A rounded iris produces a more natural rendering of out-of-focus image elements.

Close Focusing

The 35mm f/1.8 AF-S can focus as close as one foot.

Old school photography with superb quality

New camera, old ideas, using a fixed focal length lens and your own two feet to take pictures, instead of a wide-medium telephoto.
Certainly there are a few places this doesn't work, like in very close quarters where a wide angle would be better (the 35mm on a 24mm sensor is like a 50mm on a 35mm film camera). But then that zoom is always in the bag right?
The quality is certainly better than with a [bundled] 28-55mm zoom, the autofocus is much faster and more accurate, and quieter. The macro capability vastly better. The aperature wider and brighter. The lens smaller and lighter (although not as small or light as you might expect).
Switching from an economy 55-200mm to a full frame Nikon 70-300mm zoom it was hard to go back to the cheap bundled lenses that offered relatively poor performance. The 35mm offers the same high quality you would expect from Nikon.
But if you are a sit back and zoom sort of person this lens won't work for you!

Kind of disappointing lens performance

I purchased this used lens recently, and it arrived in "very good" condition, functionally and cosmetically. Whoever owned it took good care of it. I have had a chance to test it on my crop sensor body camera under both cloudy and sunny conditions, taking photos of both landscape and still life subjects, using aperture stops from f5.6 to f13. Based on the softness of the images -- in the center but especially so at the edges -- I don't think this lens is useful for any photo op requiring a bigger opening than maybe f7. However, on my camera, this lens may be flattering for portraits with the diaphragm wide open or nearly wide open. I can imagine the lens's images for portraits may appear to smooth out wrinkles! I have used extremely inexpensive 50mm f:1.8 lenses from this and another camera giant (both of which you can acquire more cheaply than this 35mm), using crop sensor and full frame bodies, and both of those lenses outperform this 35mm for sharpness. If you're looking to purchase this lens, you should not expect (in my opinion) RAW or JPEG images that can be edited and enlarged significantly to provide hard-copies larger than 8"x10".Read full review...

Must Have Basic Lens for any DX Camera Owner

Great basic prime lens for Nikon DX cameras - it's pin sharp & fast. The 35 equates to about 52mm on a full frame camera. In other words it is the standard focal length. If all you have is the kit lens, then I suggest that you buy one of these for your kit. It is inexpensive, and although the body is mostly plastic, it does have a metal mount. It is the basic, sharp, fast lens every photographer should have at their disposal. All in one zooms are great, but there are plenty of times that this simple, great in low light situations lens is all you will need. You will just have to zoom with you feet.Read full review...

Great all-around lens

First of all, the product came quickly and was well packaged. The first picture that I took with this lens I was blew away. So easy to get great background blur and it was tack sharp. 35 mm is a great focal length for my cropped sensor Nikon. Allows me to take great indoor photos, while taking in more field of view. if you're in to portraits, you would want to consider the 50 mm as well.Read full review...

Nikon 35mm 1.8g

Love using this lens, and for 140 used it's a great value I use it as my go to lens for street photography, and take it as my primary lens most places. At 1.8 - 3.5 it is slightly disappointing in terms of sharpness, but is expected from this price point. My friends sigma 35mm 1.4 blows this away even at 1.4 wide open, but there's also a 600 dollar difference. The lens gives decent bokeh and has been great for low light photography. It focuses pretty quick and quietly but struggles when there isn't strong contrast at the focus point.Read full review...

very good for Street Photography

I planned to spent New year eve in Newyork, Am pretty much sure that my kit lenses will not work in low light and night photos. Kit lens need Higher ISO settings which will not give good photos . More over kit lenses are not sharp. I cant use tripod and spend more time in taking photos because all my friends will get frustrated if I do it. So I need a compact lens which will take photos on the Go and it needs to be sharp and bright .
Nikon f1.8 gave me what I need. This lens is very sharp in low light conditions(almost no light). 35 mm is perfect for street photography ,and 35 mm focal length will work for almost 90% of the situations if you are using in street. I got impressive JPEG photos from RAW file.

Great Image quality and well built!

For the price of this lens you just can't go wrong. The 1.8 aperture is great for low light situations. It's not INSANELY sharp, but it gets the jop done in good fashion. I wish I could post photos to this review to show you how good the lens is! Again, for a lens in this price range, it produces good image quality and a very good amount of Bokeh(backround blur) in the shots you take. Just remember that at this range you'll be standing CLOSER to your object of focus if you want a portrait style photo. Good buy for the price. Two thumbs up!Read full review...

Worthy if you can handle it!

The 35mm lens helps you take fantastic images in both bright sunshine as well as low-light conditions. It allows you to use a much wider range of your camera's aperture control and help express your creativity, from portraits to landscapes to everything else.

Be warned though ---- this lens has a fixed zoom point. There's no standing in place and adjusting your zoom back and forth to frame your shot. You'll quickly realize that you'll have to move your feet and body if you want to fit everything in frame, especially when photographing large objects such as buildings.

That being said, if you can handle quickly moving around and being somewhat agile with your feet, then this can easily be a very powerful lens to add to your camera. The images it can help create are incredibly sharp, and working with a 35mm lens has a great "retro" feeling to it as well.

One of the best prime lenses by Nikon.

The 35mm lens from Nikon is one of the best prime lenses I have used. The 35mm paired with a Nikon DX camera is really a 52.5mm lens. The images the 35mm produces had nice bokeh. With careful composition, one might use this for portraits. The short length of this lens makes it easy to grab and go. Highly recommend adding this lens to your must have.Read full review...

Great lens, if this is what you are looking for! Sharp, DX 52mm equivalent, low light capable

Everything I read lead to this as being the best budget buy for a third lens. I am especially pleased with the low light capability, essentially does away with flash requirement for low interior lighting, assuming you can live with the more incandescent glow of no flash vs the bright look of the flash. Outdoors evenings and nights equally pleasing for me. If my 18-55 had this aperture level, I would not have purchased this one, but for that kind of kit zoom, I would have had to pay so much more than this lens cost. As for sharpness, I don't see any difference from the kit lens, but I am not a pro. Size also is not significantly smaller than the 18-55. I did look at the 50mm 1.8 tho, and on a DX, this is the more accurate representation of the human eye vision, or the 50mm on the full size sensor. It works pretty well in an 20x20 room space for groups, would like an 18-50 or so, but not for the money. I can just back up. Portrait lens evaluation - quite pleased. Bokeh, also quite pleased. Remember, all of this is speaking from an affordability perspective. I would love one of those $1500 70-300 Nikon 2.8 lens, but hey, I have not spent that much on my whole setup which includes a sx600 hs point and shoot and a sx520 hs superzoom, plus filters, bags, batteries, misc., etc.

On a side note, on my budget, what my D3300 is missing and will never get, is the range of the superzoom. Yes you get a lot more noise, but the sx520hs is superb at those distances that would cost me many $1000's of dollars to achieve on the D3300. Got it refurb from Canon for about $100 and use it all the time for wildlife and far off shots, realizing it suffers in quality perhaps, but is superb in those special circumstances of distance. It's only drawback is no viewfinder, but to get that you will spend closer to $350-$500, and for that I bought my D3300 with two lenses. So not really a compromise.

So I am very pleased, but I did my research. You should think thru your particular situation and requirements before purchasing this lens, but know it is a good lens and does what it is supposed to.

Lastly, the seller, (name omitted by me), provided a great deal. This $170 purchase was $225 at your local big electronics chain (name omitted by me). I purchased it at the big chain to test, returned for credit, and bought this one). If you don't know who I am talking about, you need to do some more research about your lens purchase!

Hope this helps some of you looking for a good third lens for your Nikon DX.

Necessary prime lens for DX cameras

If you own a Nikon digital DSLR, anfter your kit lens and kit telephoto lens, this 35mm AP-S DX lens is required, as your first prime lens.

It has an auto focus motor in the lens, which means that autofocus will be supported on every full sized Nikon digital DSLR ever made. This is a universal DX Nikon lens.

For Nikons with smaller APC sensors, this serves as a 50mm normal lens

For full frame Nikon DSLR cameras, it's a 35 mm normal lens

A prime lens is much sharper and faster, which means it allows in more light because of a wide aperture, than the kit lenses.
