Item Description

The AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens from Nikon is an FX format lens that is also compatible with DX-format DSLR cameras. The lens features a broad zoom range from wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, and it close-focuses down to 18″ at every focal length.

The VR II image stabilization compensates for camera shake providing up to 3.5 shutter speeds stops of shake control to enable handheld shooting in dim light and at telephoto focal lengths. The Silent Wave Motor autofocus system provides smooth and quiet AF action which is particularly helpful when shooting video. For precise focusing the lens provides an M/A focus mode switch which allows the photographer to quickly change between manual and autofocus modes.

The optical construction includes two extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements which reduce aberrations to provide sharp, color-accurate images throughout the frame. The lens elements have been treated with Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating – an optical lens coating process that maximizes light transmission while enhancing clarity and contrast. A rounded 9-blade aperture helps to create pleasing background highlights.

Versatile 10.7x FX-format Zoom Lens
Versatile zoom lens offers a broad focal length range that’s perfect for travel, landscapes, portraits, and distant subjects.

Compatible with FX and DX-Format DSLRs
The DX-format DSLR angle of view is equivalent to a 35mm format focal length of 42-450mm.

Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
Vibration Reduction system is engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens. It enables handheld shooting at up to 3.5 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and video capture.

Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
Enables fast, accurate, and quiet auto focusing.

Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) Elements
Offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at the widest aperture setting.

Three Aspherical Lens Elements
Aspherical lens elements virtually eliminate coma and other aberrations, even when shooting wide open.

Internal Focus (IF)
Provides fast and quiet autofocus. It also keeps the front element from rotating, which maintains the position of a polarizer filter or lens hood.

M/A Focus Mode Switch
Enables quick changes between manual and autofocus operation.

Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
Enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare.

The Nikkor 28-300mm VR AF-S

I received this lens a few weeks ago. I briefly read the instructions and put it on my Nikon DF. There is a small lake just west of my house. There were a couple of families of geese that were spending their time swimming in the Lake and walking along the shore. I turned on the Vibration reduction and extended the lens to its 300mm. I am a victim of familial tremors. The VR system worked so well that the image was very clear hand held!!! I tried several other shots and they were all great. I have used the lens in other situations, and, considering its extreme zoom range, the results are extraordinary. At the extreme short focal lengths there is noticible barrel distortion, but it is not severe. The price of this lens is very reasonable when one considers its complexity, and overall quality. It looks like an extremely good lens externally, and its function seems to confirm that.

It is rather heavy, but there really is no way to make a lens like this come out light. Optical diagrams and specifications make it plain that it is extremely complex, so really is amazing that it is as light as it is. It weighs around 800 grams, similar to the Nikon DF.

Because of its extreme focal length variation it is somewhat like having a whole case of lenses at the fingertips.

The lens mounts on the camera properly. The zoom collar is neither too stiff nor too weak. It is easy to hold. It extends a lot as the focal length is zoomed to 300mm, but that is the result of optical principles. It does not have a tripod socket, but it woud be difficult for the manufacturers to find a place to put one!

It seems to be an unusual value with a lot of quality for the money.

Good overall, walk-around lens but not good in low-light.

I'm satisfied overall with this lens, it's sharp, the images are clear for the most part but when zoomed in all the way to 300mm it's not perfectly sharp. It's not good in low-light because of the 3.5 maximum aperture but you have to know what you are getting. If you shoot with ISO 600-800 you'll be fine with the low-light but the image quality suffers just a bit. Not happy with the focus noise of the lens when making a video in continual auto-focus. That's just obnoxious.Read full review...

A great all purpose walk-around lens with the quality you expect from Nikon

I have a number of lenses and each one is best for its specific intended use, but for general walk-around shots I find it impossible to lug all my gear with me and get quick shots. This lens was the answer. It is a hefty piece of glass, and it does have its own set of peculiarities, but it offered the best compromise and results at a decent price range. It will never replace the tack sharp results I get with my 300mm prime, but its much easier and quicker to use then fumbling with a tripod and having to switch lenses when going from wideangle to zoom shots in situations like sightseeing, public events, and other congested places where hauling all your gear with you would be crazy. I always carry a camera with me when I am out driving around, and this is just the lens to have when you suddenly come across those situations where you find yourself saying "I wish I had brought my big zoom" or "darn, I wish I had rememberd to bring a widerangle lens". This lens has all that, and its quality Nikon glass in a "jack-of-all-trades" package. It is just my opinion, but I believe you use a specific lens for a reason and the range of this lens allows for it to be used for a larger variety of situations. So when you hear somebody say "Wow! There was a 10 point buck standing right off the edge of the road yesterday, but I couldn't get a close enough shot of it because I had a 50mm on the camera". Well guess what. I got a great shot of it because......Read full review...

Great lens for the hiking landscape photographer

I really like this lens. In most cases it is very sharp and any delay in focusing quickly is relative. In my case, manually focusing is often ncessary. I can see some photographers wanting a faster lens and my take on that is this: if I was shooting a specific kind of image and subject that demanded quick auto focus, I would recognize the need for such and rent or purchase a fast prime of the focal length required. I like this lens mostly because it is as good as it is with the wide range of focal length and very compact. The weight doesn't bother me because Im not a sissy photographer that whines about how heavy his tools are. I use a tripod most of the time and often at night, so the weight of the lens isn't an issue for me. The vibration reduction helps tremendously when shooting handheld, especially with the lens boomed out at 300mm. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to minimize the amount of lenses they carry with them and is looking for this focal range. There are better set ups that can be achieved with better lens combos of course, but for the weight and the money I'm happy with this lensRead full review...

It's a nice lens, does what I need, but try it before you buy it.

I bought this as a do-everything lens for nature photography and I am quite pleased with it. What I like is its range of focal lengths and its very fast and accurate autofocus. I also like its macro capability. It has no macro setting as such but at full zoom it still gets good close ups of most insects. It can easily focus on a hovering dragonfly. What I like less is its weight - it is quite heavy - and its all- plastic construction. I worry that if I drop it, it will break, whereas my old reflex-Nikkor 500 survived being run over by a truck. Also, I find the zoom mechanism very tight. It takes both hands to work the zoom. This may just be specific to the used model that I bought, but other reviewers also mention this.. For 'scenic' pictures, 28mm is not always wide enough for me, so I need to carry a wide angle lens too. For handheld telephoto I tend to get better results with this lens than with my manual reflex 500, because although it magnifies less, the focus is more reliable and the depth of focus better.Read full review...

Surprisingly good

Yes the lens is slow but for many situations I can easily work around it. If you need just one lense it can be great unless you're hiking because it's big and heavy. Fortunately is has a 28mm lock position which holds the lens from zooming in while off your shoulder. Having to use that switch is a pain in the ass. On the plus side I have made extraordinary prints from this this lens. It can do what I want but it sometimes takes a little experience to know how to make it work for you.Read full review...

My new favorite lens and only lens!

Yes, this is a heavier lens--BUT with that you get solid, quality construction that can stand up to a few bumps. I can't get over the sharpness this provides at every length--superb! And what a range--I no longer have to carry 2 lenses; this covers any situation I want to shoot. Great all-around lens for portraits, sports, or still life/garden photography--it does it all in stunning sharp detail! Read full review...

Capabilities are exciting.

The range of this lens is what you will need from sun up to sun down. A single fast prime or wide angle, depending on your usage, will give you everything you need in a lean light kit. This lens will auto focus on all of Nikons modern cameras, including the entry level models. It is intended for the FX (full frame) bodies, but gives a bit more reach on the crop sensor DX cameras. I use it on a D7100. I tend to use the longer rather than wide angle abilities, so the 28mm increased to 42mm and 300mm to 450mm (allowing for the 1.5 crop sensor) is outstanding for my purposes. The images are sharp and the image stabilization works well for hand held shots throughout the range in reasonable light. In the photographic world is is not a "fast" lens, with todays digital cameras it is fast enough for a vast range of photographic opportunities. Without stepping up to pro lenses costing far more money there is much that can be done with this wonderful lens. It is one of Nikon's great values.Read full review...

All Purpose Lens

I have a number of excellent lens, but was looking for a multi-purpose do-all lens. This fit the bill. You can get quality images from this lens and it has great range. I shoot with a D-750 and this lens compliments it well. If you can only take one lens with you this would be a great choice. It covers a wide range and will give you very good results. Is it perfect? No, what lens covers everything? Nevertheless, this can do most things well. You will not be disappointed. It is big and somewhat heavy to carry all day, but if you can handle it you will be satisfied.Read full review...

An Incredible Lens

This is a great lens. Easy to use and easy to carry. I love this lens with its very wide focal length. I get sharp images at all distances. I would recommend this lens to anyone.

Nikon excels again

I'm an advanced amateur photographer shooting landscapes, nature, animals, fast cars and faster jets. I've owned Nikon DSLR's and lenses for the past five years, always upgrading as I make new purchases. I use a Nikon D300 camera body. I bought this lens to replace the Nikon 18-200mm, even though I gave up some range on the low end. As soon as I opened the box I could tell by the weight and feel of it that it is a high quality lens. I started taking a variety of shots of my dogs, inside, outside, and in a park. I was very happy with the results - even my wife complimented me on the pictures which is hard to come by. I used it last night, in the dark, zoomed all the way out to take a few shots at an outdoor symphony concert, with the ISO set at 3200. I didn't use a tripod since there wasn't room; I handheld it so I didn't expect good results. I'm amazed at the sharpness of the images. The VR II works as advertised too. Today I took it out to run it through a few comparison shots to see how well it works under nature/landscape settings on a tripod and handheld. I also took some images to merge into HDR images. The results were crystal clear and exceptionally fast set at ISO 200, even zoomed out to the max. Although it weights more than the Nikon 18-200mm lens, it's a fair exchange for the speed, reach, and clarity that result. I'm planning out my weekends around using this lens at a NASCAR race, air show, and fall foliage in the Shenandoah Valley. This lens is well worth the price; I highly recommend it.Read full review...
