The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Lens is a standard lens with an ultra-bright f/1.4 aperture, which allows for fast, accurate shooting with available light. It is also the excellent choice for when a shallow depth of field is desired. The equivalent focal length when used on a DX-format camera is 75mm, which makes it ideal as a short portrait lens with desirable shallow depth of field. The optical design of this lens minimizes flare and chromatic aberration. The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) feature ensures fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds. An ideal prime lens, perfect for full-length portraits, travel photography or any type of available-light shooting. Note: AF-S feature is not supported by certain camera models. Much like the older nikkor f1.4 from the 70s this new 50mm 1.4 is a bit soft wide open. It's just a characteristic of the lens and is only truly noticeable at close focusing distances.
Regardless I would absolutely recommend it. It's a great portrait lens on my D7200 and when you stop it down to f4 or 5.6 is tack sharp. It's fantastic for low light situations and gives you that extra reach allowing lower ISOs and more time handheld as the evening wears on. It's Nikon's fastest autofocus 50mm (I wish they would make a 1.2g someday soon). If you love smooth bokeh then you will be very satisfied with this lens.Read full review...

Nikkor 50mm f14 G Lens
in the tradition of Nikon's 50mm offerings, the 50mm af G lens is well built and works perfectly on my nikon df body.
my one caveat is that the G designation discards the aperture ring on the lens, itself, and depends on the body to make the needed adjustments. this negates use of this lens, even though it retains the traditional nikon f mount, on any of the film nikons and a number of the prior digital bodies.
so, we may say, that finally, nikon places the ability to adjust aperture on the digital body alone. so, as a result, i find this lens and the entire G line to be of poor value when compared to the D lens offerings, which will work on any nikon body from the 1959 nikon f to today's digital imaging devices.
at the end, it cheapens the product.Read full review...

Why did I wait so long to purchase this great lens? I had zooms that covered the 50mm range however to f1.4 aperture makes a great difference in the impact of my images. The quality of the build and the feel make it a strong favorite. There are lots of YouTube videos about this lens. I got a great deal on Ebay purchasing this 50mm f1.4 lens.Read full review...
A great portrait prime on a DX body
I'm shooting with a DX format Nikon body, a D7500. This lens makes a great portrait lens at an equivalent 75mm focal length. Nikon in fact actually recommends this lens for this purpose. It is also a great low light prime.Read full review...

Nikon 50mm awesome prime lens
50mm lens is the standard for point of view that most closely resembles the visual arc of the human eye. It should be the go-to lens for both novice and pro photographers. This Nikon 50mm prime is light weight and compact in size. Its sharpness and contrast I would place against any comparable lens. Sometimes one forgets that photography is about image creation and the fun in creating the image. Too many nowadays scour the posts for all the technical information and forget the joy of just walking in a park and taking photos for a couple of hours. I recommend this and the Nikon 35mm in all photographers kits.Read full review...

Very good lens
Crisp image. Good bokeh.
AF is quick. Light weight, convenient focal length for both closeup shots and small area/scenic shots.
Love it very much. More versatile than my 85mm 1.8.

High quality essential base prime lens which is fast in all ways and sharp
Envisioning this will be a good and fast general lens for travel as well as in-camera-crop turns it into a great 75mm portrait lens. You're not limited and weighed down with the heavy 75mm 1.4 prime, which is a great lens but its useless if you don't have it with you when you need it because its too big and heavy to carry along. Save the weight to carry a wide-compact-zoom like the 24-120 or 24-85 for "just in case everything else".
I've thought this through and tested for what works for me, your needs and results may differ.Read full review...

Great light and sharp lens
I own the Sigma Art 1.4 and I prefer the Nikkor : it is almost as sharp, but a third of the price and weight. It's on my camera much more often than the Sigmas even though optically they're clearly superior. At $300 this lens is a bargain.Read full review...
